Handcrafted in the UK We breathe life into forgotten paper Original Papers • Folded Creations • Preserved Stories Century-old ephemera — vintage maps, original sheet music, antique books — rescued, hand-folded, and framed. Built to last. Designed to make you smile and bring the memory to life again.
We don't just frame paper, we turn it into art. Most framers frame artwork. We do something different. We take original vintage papers — genuine documents, not reproductions — and transform them from flat, fragile two-dimensional objects into three-dimensional works of art with depth, presence, and personality. We've been working with folded paper for over ten years. The conservation framing is more recent — a natural extension of the same process, now backed by proper conservation techniques: acid-free materials, UV protection, adhesive-free encapsulation where the paper demands it. The result is something that makes people stop and look. That makes them smile. That helps them reconnect with that moment. From document to artwork. From forgotten to celebrated. From flat surface to visual depth. That's the transformation — and it's what we do.
Your paper. Your memory. Your artwork. Have something tucked away in a box — a grandfather's WWII aviation chart, a mother's favourite musical score, a map of a place that means everything to someone? It's sitting there degrading. Acid migration, fibre breakdown, light damage. Time is working against it. We can virtually stop that process — and turn it into something that makes people smile every time they walk past it. Not a reproduction. Not a print. The original document, transformed into a three-dimensional work of art built to last another century.

We don't just frame paper. We turn it into art. Pixies & Sprites was born from a fascination with the stories hidden inside old paper. We search for original vintage papers — maps, sheet music, illustrations, documents, ephemera — that might otherwise be forgotten, and we transform them through bespoke handcrafted framing and dimensional design into unique works of art. Our process goes beyond traditional framing. By introducing depth, layering, and carefully crafted presentation, we create pieces that feel alive — turning two-dimensional paper into three-dimensional storytelling. Not reproductions. Not prints. The original document, elevated. We've been working with folded paper for over ten years. The conservation framing is more recent — a growth area, and a natural extension of the same obsession. The goal is always the same: make something that stops a person in their tracks, makes them smile, and takes them straight back to a treasured memory.
For more than ten years, we have worked with original newspapers, books, maps, magazines, advertisements and printed ephemera from across the decades. What began as a passion for paper folding and paper art gradually evolved into a wider appreciation for the stories, history and craftsmanship contained within the original papers themselves. As we worked with increasingly fragile and historic materials, understanding how paper ages and deteriorates became just as important as understanding how to fold or frame it. A background in chemical engineering provided a valuable foundation, helping us develop methods and techniques that respect the original material while supporting its long-term preservation. The current process is the result of that iteration — a documented protocol, not a recipe passed down by feel. Conservation framing is now a growth area for us, and the chemistry underpins all of it. Today, every piece we create is guided by the same philosophy: honour the paper, preserve its story, and create something meaningful from it.
When the paper itself is the artwork. Not every paper becomes a folded artwork. Over the years we have collected thousands of original newspapers, magazines, books, maps, advertisements and printed documents. Some are too delicate to transform. Others contain illustrations, articles, advertisements and moments in history that would lose their meaning if folded. For these pieces, preservation becomes more important than transformation. We carefully select original papers that capture a particular moment, event, idea or story and present them in a way that allows their history and significance to be appreciated and remembered. These pieces preserve more than paper. They preserve the people, places, products, ideas and events that once captured the imagination of their age — not simply framed documents, but genuine windows into another time.
A Fascination with Paper What began as a love of paper folding, origami and paper art more than ten years ago gradually became a fascination with the original papers themselves. Newspapers, books, maps, illustrations and advertisements all carried stories that deserved to be preserved as well as transformed. Learning Through Experience Working with historic papers quickly revealed that every sheet is different. Some papers fold beautifully, while others are fragile, acidic or vulnerable to damage. Understanding how materials age and interact became just as important as artistic design, leading to years of research, experimentation and refinement. Where We Are Today Today, Pixies & Sprites combines creativity, conservation and craftsmanship. Some papers are transformed into folded artworks. Others are preserved in their original form as Preserved Stories. In every case, our aim is the same: to honour the paper and ensure its story can continue to be enjoyed for years to come.
Have something worth keeping? A piece of sheet music. An old map. A book with handwriting in the margins. If it triggers a memory — or could trigger one for someone you love — there's probably something we can do with it. Every commission starts with a conversation about the material and what you want people to feel when they see it.

Not reproductions. Not prints. Not modern copies. Every piece we make begins with an original document — a genuine newspaper, book, magazine, map, illustration or piece of printed ephemera. When you buy from us, you are buying something that existed in the world before we touched it. Something with its own history, its own age, its own story. The foxing on the page, the slight yellowing of the paper, the ink that has faded a little over decades or centuries — these are not flaws. They are the proof. They are what makes each piece unique and irreplaceable. We will never use reproductions. Not because we couldn't — they would be cheaper, easier and more consistent. But because they would be dishonest. The whole point is the original.
Some papers are given a new life. Through folding, layering and paper engineering, we transform original documents into three-dimensional artworks — pieces that are entirely new, yet made entirely from something old. The challenge is always to respect the original material while creating something that stands on its own. A sheet of music becomes a sculptural form. A map becomes a composition. A book page becomes part of something that could not have existed without it. These are our folded and layered artworks — made to order or available as exact pieces where a specific original has been used.
Some papers are simply too important, too complete or too fragile to transform. For these, preservation becomes more important than transformation. We carefully select original documents that capture a particular moment, event, idea or story, and present them in a way that allows their history and significance to be appreciated and remembered. A wartime report. An engineering illustration. A Victorian advertisement. A forgotten piece of social history. These become our Preserved Stories — original papers framed and presented as they are, so their story can continue to be told. We never alter, cut or modify these pieces. The paper remains exactly what it is. Our role is simply to ensure it is seen.
Every piece is made by hand, one at a time, in our workshop in Norfolk. We do not have a production line. We do not outsource. This means each piece takes time. It means we cannot always guarantee exact replicas of pieces you have seen. It means that if you order something similar to a piece in our gallery, it will be similar — but not identical. We think that is a feature, not a problem.
Using original vintage and antique papers is, in itself, an act of sustainability. We are not consuming new resources. We are extending the life of things that already exist. We source our papers carefully and responsibly. We do not buy from sources we cannot verify. We do not knowingly purchase materials that have been removed from archives, libraries or collections without proper authority. When we are unsure about provenance, we do not buy.
We are a small business, based in a cottage in the Norfolk countryside. We are not a brand. We are not a concept. We are people who love old things and believe that making something by hand, with care and attention, is worth doing. We hope that comes through in every piece we make.
Much of what we do is bespoke — made specifically for one person, to mark one moment. A wedding anniversary. A retirement. A birthday. A loss. When someone trusts us with a commission, they are trusting us with something that matters to them. We do not take that lightly. We will always tell you honestly if we cannot do what you are asking, or if we think a different approach would serve you better.
